Alicia Vikander To Play Lara Croft In Tomb Raider Reboot
Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl (2015) |
Hot off the awards trail, cooling off her newly achieved
Oscar, Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The
Danish Girl) is ready to take her acting career to the next level as Lara
Croft! That’s right, Tomb Raider is
making a comeback with Vikander as its new lead for MGM, Warner Bros., and GK
Films.
This will be a new to the scene and untested Lara Croft on
the verge of new adventures. Angelina
Jolie originally brought the character to the silver screen with 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life,
both of which took Jolie’s career to the next level as an international
superstar and if there was any question as to whether or not she was a
household name at the time, this was that deciding point.
Vikander looks to accomplish the same here. As the “it” girl last year with Ex Machina (my favorite for the year), The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Danish Girl (what she took home the Oscar
for best supporting actress with), Vikander seems to be swiftly on the road to
household stardom. With no plans of slowing
down, seeing this year alongside Michael Fassbender in the drama The Light Between Oceans and Matt Damon
in the latest installment of the Jason Bourne franchise. Oceans
being from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue
Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines).
So a range of films Vikander seems to be suitable for.
MGM & WB are co-producing with MGM overseeing production,
acquiring rights from GK Films who acquired them from Square Enix, Ltd. in 2011. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is set to direct with a date still to be determined.
